What is the difference between compact and spongy bone? (2 points) Spongy bone looks like a sponge hence the name and contains a lot of red bone marrow (medulla ossium rubra). Red bone marrow is what produces red blood cells. Compact bones which consists of medulla ossium flava or yellow bone marrow, is made mostly of fat cells (Openstax College, 2013). 2. Explain the relationship between calcium and bones. (1 point) Calcium is essential for maintaining necessary level of bone mass to support structures of the body. (1 point) According to the Institute of Medicine, the recommended daily amount of calcium to get is: * 1-3 years: 700 milligrams daily * 4-8 years: 1,000 milligrams daily * 9-18 years: 1,300 milligrams daily * 19-50 years: 1,000 milligrams daily * 51-70 years: 1,200 milligrams daily for women; 1,000 milligrams daily for men * 71 and older: 1,200 milligrams daily 4. Discuss the effects of sodium, caffeine, and alcohol on calcium levels in the body. (1 point) Pay attention to foods that cause calcium loss through the urine. While a certain amount is perfectly natural, there is evidence to suggest that calcium loss through the urine is increased by excess consumption of salt, caffeine and protein.
